SHADES : A poem on Racism

When I learned about colours, I also learned shades.
When I learned about humans, I learned that we are one.
We have just one colour, but there are different shades.
We’re one colour on the inside, but on the outside, why more?

We are born in different climates, but we live in one world,
We have different fluids within us but flow with one blood.
We have tagged ourselves with colours of monochrome screens.
Black and White show the efforts of disunity schemes.

What happened to make “white” ruler over “black”?
So severe to take away their lives by attack.
What reasons are birthed and breathed by “Whites”?
That they feel superior and are blind to the blight.

There’s oxygen without pay, but the “Blacks” still can’t breathe.
There are human rights in place, but we really can’t live.
We are taught that we are equal, yet we don’t have a say.
And with every passing day, the “Whites” get their way.

I can’t live, I can’t breathe, I can’t hold my head high.
When I move, every inch, I am scared that I will die.
To live as I please is a dream that I have.
But a dream is all it is because I am “Black”.

I believe that before all these classes were formed.
Once upon a long time, all the world was just one.
When I learned about colours, I also learned shades.
When I learned about humans, I learned we are the same.
