"NYSC has killed lots of Nigerian Youths, Corp members pass out without hope of getting jobs" - Member of House of Reps lament as the bill for NYSC scrap progresses for second reading
The call for the scrap of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) is gradually becoming a reality as the House of Reps has taken the NYSC Discontinuation bill up for a second reading.
The promoter of the bill, Mr. Awaji Abiante stated several reasons why the NYSC needed to be scrapped.
According to him, the NYSC should be scrapped because it has caused the lives of several innocent Nigerian Youths, some who died by accident and even election violence, others by banditry, rape, kidnap and the rest.
He also stated that the current insecurity in the country is another reason why the NYSC programme should be scrapped because youths tend to travel round the country to go to their various camps, thus putting their lives at risk.
Mr. Abiante added that both private and public agencies no longer recruit corp members as they did before and as such when the Corp members finish serving, they pass out with no hope of a gainful employment, thereby wasting one full year of their lives.
The scrapping of the NYSC is one pending issue Nigerians are looking forward to as many really agree the Scheme no longer add value to the youths.
NYSC was approved during the Gowon's regime in May 22, to1973 to help Nigerian Youths reintegrate and make up for the damages of the Nigerian Civil War between July 6, 1967 to January 15, 1970.
