22-year old singer gets death sentence in Kano for blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad

An upper Sharia court in Kano has sentenced a 22-year old singer Yahaya Sharif to death by hanging for blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad in his song.

The verdict was given by Judge Aliyu Kano after the singer was found guilty of the charges brought against him.

Yahaya Sharif was accused of blaspheming against the Holy Prophet and Scholar of Islam in a song he circulated on WhatsApp in March 2020.

Following the incident, the singer's family home in Kano was burnt down by angry protesters, his father disowned him publicly and announced that he does not share in the same religious beliefs and views as his son.
"If I had the authority to punish him by law, I will do that right away" his father said.

The Sharia court on Monday also sentenced one Umar Farouq to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for making belittling statements about Allah in a public argument.

Both Yahaya and Farouq have 30 days to appeal the judgement.
